France, April 1917.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When in charge of a bearer party he twice led them into what appeared certain death from shell-fire to rescue the wounded.  He was largely responsible for saving three men’s lives, deliberately entering the worst spot to do his work, and showing magnificent courage and devotion to duty
