In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in Korea during the period 1st July to 31 December 1952.
Lieutenant Colonel Paterson has commanded 16th New Zealand Field Regiment since February 1952 and has done so with outstanding courage, ability and success.  His Regiment has given continuous and devoted support not only to its affiliated 28th Commonwealth Infantry Brigade but to the whole Division.  Lieutenant Colonel Paterson has been indefatigable in arranging fire support for the infantry, in visiting his forward Observing Officers and the Observation Posts and in setting a high standard of duty under all and every operational condition.  A badly damaged leg has had no effect on his energy and he has doggedly refused to let it affect his ubiquity.  The devotion of his New Zealanders to their guns, the high courage in battle of their forward Observing parties and linesmen, and the quick unfailing support of the whole Regiment reflect the fine personal qualities of leadership, the sense of duty and the efficiency of the Commanding Officer.
