NORTHCROFT Henry William
Captain, Armed Constabulary

New Zealand Cross
Captain Northcroft was awarded the NZC in the early 1900's (Cowan states "some forty years after the events in which he earned it") for deeds performed during the attacks on Pungarehu and Tirotiro-moana, Taranaki in October and November of 1866. At Pungarehu, he "rescued Sergeant-Major Duff, who was mortally wounded and helpless, from the enemy; also at the attack upon Tirotiro-moana, in November of the same year, Mr. Northcroft , being on that occasion in front in the bush with Private Economedes, was met by the enemy, who fired and killed the latter. Mr. Northcroft held his ground until assistance came up, preventing mutilation of the body and the capture of carbine and revolver, besides a considerable sum of money the man had on his person.
