Persia – Dunsterforce.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at Sain Kalea on 6th August 1918.  He was with a small party detailed to cover the retirement of a column, and he was left behind to bring the transport out of a village.  He and another non-commissioned officer beat off a determined enemy attempt to capture the mules.  Throughout the fight for fifteen miles he worked a Lewis gun and rifle continuously.
