Egypt, June 1918.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty while on patrol with his troop.  A squadron of hostile cavalry was suddenly encountered, and in the fight which ensured the officer leading the troop was killed.  He at once took charge and occupied a position from which he brought rifle fire to bear on the squadron and put it to flight.  He then completed his allotted task.  Throughout the engagement, by his coolness and disregard of personal risk, he set a fine example
