For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack.  He had charge of the telephone lines running from battalion headquarters to the firing line, and several times during the operations the lines were cut or broken.  Each time he went forward under heavy shell and machine-gun fire and successfully repaired them, so that telephone communication was maintained throughout the action
