France, July 1917.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  When enemy shelling blew up an ammunition dump close to his position, though he was badly shaken by the explosion, he at one organised a party and attempted to extinguished a fire which had started.  On another occasion he was severely wounded while bringing up ammunition, but he succeeded in delivering his loads, and steadied his men by his example under intense fire
