For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  All the officers near him in an attack became casualties, and he rallied the men under the most intense machine-gun fire and pushed forward.  By taking command in a critical situation he kept his company under control and consolidated the position.  His leadership, cheerfulness, and contempt of danger were an inspiration to the men
