Gazetted 3 November 1942, Supp 35771, p4796
During the battle of Alamein, Egypt, in the attack on Deir el Munassib on the night of 3-4 September 1942, Sergeant Davis single-handed attacked and killed the crew of ten manning an 88 millimetre gun.  He then used the gun effectively against the enemy, putting two machine-gun posts out of action.  When the enemy counter-attacked with grenades and machine-gun fire and the Company was in a precarious position, Sergeant Davis used a captured machine-gun against them effectively.  His leadership and control were potent factors in the success of the attack and defeating the counter-attack and he showed courage and initiative throughout the action
