For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on  15th October 1918, on Saint Quentin Canal.  He succeeded in capturing in succession four machine guns and sixteen prisoners who were harassing the left flank from a sunken road.  On one occasion the enemy officer, after holding up his hands, endeavoured to stab one of his party.  Lance Corporal Coppell immediately shot him dead.
