At about 1.45pm on 1 April 1900, Lieutenant John Findlay, New Zealand Mounted Infantry, was trying to cross the swollen Hartbeeste River at
Kenhardt, Cape Colony when his horse was washed away by the strong current and he was unable to swim to land.  At great risk, Private Cassidy
went to his help on horseback but their weight overturned the horse and Cassidy, with much difficulty, then swam with him to the bank.
