On 16 May 1972, Sergeant BURKE was the crewman of an Iroquois helicopter called in to rescue a party of rock hunters who had been lost in the Kaimai Ranges, near Te Aroha.  The party, which included some elderly people, had to be lifted 120 feet from a narrow stream bed to the hovering Iroquois.  Heavy driving rain, which reduced visibility, and severe turbulence creating pronounced oscillation in the winch cable, made conditions for the rescue hazardous.  In these difficult circumstances, Sergeant BURKE completed seven winch ascents with each member of the party.  He displayed great skill and complete disregard for his personal safety in successfully and speedily accomplishing the rescue
