For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  On August 30th 1918, during our attack east of bapaume a gap was formed in our Infantry.  With his section of guns he quickly grasped the situation, and though under a heavy machine gun fire from the enemy, he skilfully placed his guns in the gap, silenced a number of the enemy's guns, and inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy Infantry.  His bold handling of his gunsundoubtedly saved a doubtful situation and restricted the line and the flank
