Messines, 7 June 1917.  For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.  He showed fine leadership and initiative in commanding hi platoon under heavy shellfire during and after an attack.  Although his trenches were constantly blown in, he kept control of his men, and by his courage and example set a very high standard to all ranks.
